Travel overview

Since her daughter will enter primary school in September this year, she wants to have a long-distance tour of the whole family before she goes to school. After a variety of considerations, we finally set our destination in Australia, which is the most suitable for parents and children and has the most diverse and spectacular scenery. While doing our homework, we found that many of our friends chose the RV self driving travel mode, which was just suitable for our family trip with the old and the young. So our perfect 3100 km RV self driving tour started like this

Introduction [selection and reservation of RV]

There are two well-known RV brands in Australia: britz and Apollo. Generally, tourists will choose one of the two, and they can see the most on the road and in the RV camp. Moreover, the RV of the two families can enjoy a 10% discount when staying in the chain camp of Big4. The types of RV under the two brands are basically similar, and each of them is divided into three sub brands, high, middle and low, according to different vehicle conditions. The high-end brand of britz is Maui, the mid-range brand is britz, and the low-end brand is mighty. In fact, Maui's new car will be eliminated to britz after driving for a certain number of kilometers and years, and then to mighty.

There are many RV booking websites in Australia, such as www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au

www.aussiecampervans.com

www.campervans.com.au

www.campertravel.com.au

These English websites are not very different, just the interface style is different. They are similar to Ctrip or elong as an intermediary platform. You can search the RV you want to order according to the travel time and the requirements of RV. In fact, the page is not complicated, but if there are students who are really not sure about their English, please rest assured. Now there is a similar website in China: www.motorhomerpublic.com (definitely not an advertisement, I didn't place an order here). It has a full Chinese interface and has Chinese telephone or QQ customer service, I've compared the price with foreign websites, and the difference is not big. It seems that their headquarters and customer service are in New Zealand. If you want to save your mind, you can consider it.

The price of a car has a lot to do with the season. December to February is the peak season in Australia. Not only do many Chinese people go out of season, but also many public holidays, such as Christmas, new year's day and student holidays, are covered. Therefore, accommodation, car rental and catering are the most expensive during this period (generally, we'd better not join in the fun during this period...). June to August is the off-season, and it's winter in Australia. Although the price is good, it's still not recommended. After all, it's so far away that I don't want to blow cold wind every day. March to May and September to November are the peak seasons. The comfortable weather in spring and autumn and the appropriate price will make people feel very comfortable. This time we set out in early March. At that time, the standard price of a 6-person fronter saloon car in britz was $160 per day. Last year, I got a 10% discount when I caught up with the activities at the bottom of the list, and it should be more than $200 per day in the peak season.

The booking process should first determine the approximate travel time. The earlier you start, the more appropriate it is. Generally, the preparation time for a trip to Australia should be at least 3 months. I always have the courage to pay the ticket, and I will pay the ticket first. After all, the price of the cabbage is fleeting. (although the price is awesome, there are many uncertainties. After the ticket is finished, I began to check the RV. After all, I have determined the round-trip time and in and out of the city when booking the ticket. All the time in the middle can be arranged and allocated by myself. The advantage of booking a RV is that you don't have to worry about choosing a hotel every day (choosing a hotel is disastrous for Virgo's phobia of choice...). When you decide to travel from China to Australia, you should pay attention to that there is no britz network on the gold coast, so you'd better not go in and out on the gold coast; If you choose to go in and out of the gold coast, you also need to take a small train to Brisbane, which is nearest to it, and return it. PS: at present, britz's outlets in Australia include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Cairns, Hobart, Alice springs and bloom.

The minimum booking time of RV is generally more than 7 days. At that time, I was worried about the physical and aesthetic fatigue caused by the self driving tour of all RV in more than 10 days. I also considered the journey from Brisbane to Sydney, the domestic flight from Sydney to Melbourne, and renting a car to drive on Dayang road. But in the end, considering that we are old and small, we have a lot of luggage, and it is more difficult to catch up with domestic low-cost airlines and change hotels every day, so it is still the whole process of RV self driving from Brisbane to Sydney to Dayang road to Melbourne. Facts have proved that the 16 day journey of 3100km still makes us feel that both the time and the journey are too short and too fast

It's a long way to go. After returning to the rental car, confirming the time, collecting and returning the car, I started to pick up the car online. In fact, for our big five and small one, we have to rent a car for six people, so there is only one choice (saved me...) britz or Apollo. Of course, we finally chose britz for the following reasons: first of all, when I made the reservation, the price of britz was lower, which was the primary reason; Secondly, britz's saloon cars are basically automatic, and Apollo will be assigned to manual transmission in many cases. He drives a large truck with manual transmission for more than ten days in a place he doesn't know; Finally, it is said in many travel notes that britz will be upgraded to Maui free of charge (usually when the car can't be allocated). Wow, it's a great attraction for me who like to fight for character. Although I didn't catch up with the free upgrade later, I still think our car was just replaced by Maui. The interior and handling performance are very good (Ah Q).

Through the comparison between Chinese and English booking websites, I finally placed an order on britz's official website. Why? 1. Maybe I was catching up with the activity at that time, and I can get 10% discount for booking on the official website, which is cheaper than other intermediary websites; 2. It is said in many travel notes that it is a bit troublesome to solve the problem of booking through the intermediary website if there are some unexpected or changing situations. Especially, some travel friends have just caught up with britz's big promotion after booking, and those who book through the intermediary website can't adjust the price, while those who book through the official website can change to the big promotion price through communication, So I decided to book from the official website! http://www.britz.com.au/cn

Although britz now has a Chinese website, the booking and ordering interface is all in English, and the process is not complicated. Just click the time and city to pick up and return the car, and the number of passengers will be good. But the key point is the purchase of insurance. I strongly recommend you to buy full insurance. Besides, they also have a bonus pack that covers full insurance. Not counting the cost of car rental, this pack is $65 a day, including zero coverage of all risks, free car return from other places and a bottle of natural gas, One additional driver is free of charge (only one driver is allowed to drive and record in the car rental fee, and two drivers can record and open the bag in turn), and the rent of a picnic table and chair with the same number of passengers is free of charge. Picnic tables and chairs are very practical. They can be used in campsites and in the wild. It's better to rent them alone!

Make travel more comfortable~

So this comfort pack is very cost-effective, especially for students who still need to return their cars from other places. It's equivalent to saving $280. In addition, the deposit is only $250, while the deposit for not buying all risks insurance is $7500. The most important thing is zero compensation, as long as it is not a single vehicle rollover (refers to the rollover that has no contact with other vehicles due to driving reasons, such as the cross wind on Dayang road. You have to buy insurance separately, and the price is about $98). You don't have to pay for any accident during the journey. Foreign countries, peace and ease of mind is the most important!

In addition to insurance, students who take children to school must book child seats, which is also stipulated by law in Australia, otherwise they will be severely punished if they are found by the police.

After the successful reservation, you need to use an international credit card to authorize, and 20% of the car rental fee will be charged first. The remaining fee will be paid by email two weeks before the trip. It is said that you can also pay cash at the scene when you pick up the car (2% service charge is mandatory for credit card payment). In order to save the time of collecting the car, I pay online. After each payment, you will receive a confirmation email, which must be printed out and taken with the pre authorized credit card when you pick up the car( As doupa is a driver, I make reservation in the name of doupa.)

Introduction [main types of RV] types of RV

Let's talk about the 6-berth front 7.22m * 2.28M * 3.25m we rent

Our trip is five big and one small, so the frontier of britz's 6-person saloon car is just right for us. The price and condition are moderate, and the models are Mercedes Benz or Volkswagen. I feel that our car may have just been eliminated by Maui, and the interior and structure are basically the same, so I'll go to Maui's picture. With toilet and shower room, equipped with TV, DVD, CD, refrigerator, microwave oven, sink, hot water, stove, basic Kitchenware and other living equipment. The interior space is much larger than I imagined. The storage space and functional areas are reasonably divided. It is the perfect car and home that has accompanied us for 16 days.

Another 6-berth renegade is relatively rare in Australia, but it is relatively common in New Zealand. The main difference between the 6-berth renegade and the one we rent is that it has a double row cab. During driving, everyone has to sit in the cab. The key cab is not connected with the rear compartment. You need to get off the car to get into the rear compartment. Other layouts are basically the same. The advantage is that everyone should have a good view during driving. The disadvantage is that it is not convenient to enter the rear compartment, especially in rainy days.

Four people (4 berths) 6.22-7.22m * 2.3m * 3.3m can accommodate four adults, with toilet and shower room, air conditioning and heating in cab and rear compartment, TV, DVD, CD and sunshade. Many wayward couples in Europe and America rent this car even when they travel. The appearance of this car is basically the same as the RV we rent. The difference is that there is a double row four person sofa behind the cab and a single row two person sofa.

3 ~ 4 berths 5.38m * 1.88m * 2.8m, suitable for a family of three, can accommodate two adults and one child, equipped with small refrigerator, stove, sink and other basic kitchen utensils, no toilet and shower room. The basic structure is a bed on the top and a bed on the bottom of the rear compartment. It is a simple table and sofa when it is put away in the daytime. In the road and camp, this car is also more common. The advantage is cost-effective, and should be better control, after all, just a small van. The disadvantage is that the interior space is still very cramped. We met a couple from Chengdu in the camp and visited the interior of this car. It's not suitable for tall people. But this one is really the first choice for a family of three. We should consider the pros and cons. Now this kind of car can accommodate four adults. It's called Voyager, and its internal and external dimensions and space are exactly the same.

两人(2 berth)Shower and Toilet 7.2m*2m*3m

It can accommodate two adults. This model is high-end and comfortable. Maui's cars are usually Mercedes Benz, with toilet and shower room, refrigerator, microwave oven, TV, DVD, air conditioning, heating equipment and hot water. If we are the only two people driving next time, I will consider this one first.

Two (2 berths)

The price is relatively low. Generally, it is a hi top van. There is a small table and sofa in the back seat for daytime use. At night, it can be simply turned into a double bed. The car will be equipped with a small refrigerator, stove, sink and other basic kitchen utensils, no toilet and shower room. We saw on the road that many young backpackers in Europe and the United States choose this model, but for those of us who rarely drive a RV, it's still too poor to travel. We don't recommend it!

4WD (3-5berth)

This model is basically suitable for those who plan to go to Northern Territory or see big rocks. The 4WD SUV (the accident insurance is not compensated when the non 4WD SUV drives into the 4WD section).

Along the way, we also saw the domineering or cute RV driven by local people in the camp.

I strongly doubt whether it is possible to use both land and water

Due to the Australian law, tourists can't drive a trailer, so we can only enjoy these things... Compared with our all-in-one trailer, the convenience of the trailer is that after we connect the water and electricity to the campsite, we can still drive a small car to buy and go for a ride in the town.

There's a cute fat retro RV~

Introduction [internal and external structure of britz 6-person saloon car]

The size of the britz frontier 6-person RV we rent is 7.22m long, 2.28M wide and 3.25m high. It's really a big guy.

The introduction picture I saw on the Internet before is like this~

But after I received the car, I felt that the interior was very new, the seats were made of leather instead of cloth in the picture, and the storage space and layout were more reasonable. So I seriously doubt that it was just replaced by Maui. Soon after that, Xiaoxi took the place of Xiaojie who failed to upgrade free of charge

This is the rear space of the car, with a circle of sofas, which can be used as a restaurant for six people during the day

At night, it can be turned into a 1.8m double bed. This is grandma Dou's and grandma Dou's bedroom. According to my mother, it's heavier than sleeping at home. In order to save trouble, we've spread this bed from the first day, and we can put some clothes and sundries on it during the day. Because we either eat at the picnic table and chair under the car, or in the public kitchen of the camp:) we return the car to the table of the first day.

The double bed on the top of the cab should be 1.8m wide. I can't sleep with my strong bean dad. RV company will provide a full set of clean and disinfected bedding: pillows, quilts, sheets, bath towel.

There are windows on both sides and above, so you won't feel suffocated

The TV is by the bed

This area has the highest utilization rate. During the day, it is a seat for four people to see the scenery. At night, it is the bedroom of Doudou and grandma. Occasionally, it is a guest table~

There is also storage space under the chair, with the switch and safe on one side

One side for the bed board

Remove the table at night, and use the bed board and cushion to make a bed like building blocks

It should be about 1.4m wide

In addition to the bedding provided by the RV company, we also brought two sleeping bags for use. As expected, they were used in the cold ocean road.

Then the bedroom, then the kitchen~

There is a stove with four fire eyes, and there is a small oven under the stove. The stove and oven are made of natural gas and can be used in the field without electricity. Although the oven is not big, it's very easy to use. It's a great way to bake delicious pizza!

Microwave oven and refrigerator, microwave oven must be connected to the electricity in the camp to use, refrigerator in the process of driving the car battery, connected to the electricity in the camp will jump to 220 V AC. There is a CD player hidden in the cabinet above the microwave oven, which can connect mobile phones and other devices with audio cable.

The refrigerator is so good!! Before I went there, I was worried that the capacity of the refrigerator was too small, which would affect our family's eating ability:) in fact, we don't have to worry about it at all. We usually go to the supermarket once in less than two days, sweeping all kinds of lamb chops, steaks, sausages, milk, drinks, ice cream... How many are there in the refrigerator, I love it so much ~ PS: how much can we eat? Please pay attention to the delicious food in the follow-up RV tour

The freezer is not big enough to hold two boxes of quick-frozen pizzas and 20 popsicles~

Take a look at the dishes in the kitchen

In this way, the clamping position will prevent the breakage caused by vibration during driving

There are several sets of cups alone, such as tea, drink, champagne, red wine... Can I say that I don't divide them into such details at home:)

Sterilize sealed knife, fork, spoon, BBQ clip, bottle opener, etc

Shovel, chopping board, dishcloth, etc

Electric and gas kettle and toaster

Sink and small cabinet for storing fruits and vegetables (gas can provide hot water)

Chaos every morning:)

Here's the bathroom. We used Doudou once and basically used it as a storage room. We can hide two large suitcases here~

Turn up the sink when using the toilet

The sink looks like it's turned over. There's a shower nozzle beside it. We haven't used it either.

There is a small cabinet beside the door, which is the place to store the ladder, table bracket and clothes hanger.

There are switches for water pumps, whole car electricity, lights and hot water, as well as electricity meters and TV remote controls

Let's take a look at the large capacity lockers

We've packed six of us and four of our suitcases, and there's plenty left

After looking inside and outside the car, this is a small box for natural gas tank. When driving, you should turn off the valve and lock the door.

Also need to lock the wire box

The water inlet of the water tank and the glove box outside the car, the broom, the water basin and the picnic tables and chairs are usually placed here.

Kitchen waste water outlet, in the camp connected to the sewage pipe into the sewer

The toilet has a separate sewage tank

There is also a separate dumping place in the camp, which can be dragged like a suitcase. We used it once, and we recommend it after dinner~

Sunshade, our car is electric, and some RV need manual collection and support.

The complete range of kitchen utensils and tableware on the RV is enough for foreigners, but for Chinese people, there are still two necessary artifact of RV: rice cooker and chopsticks! They played an irreplaceable role in our family's RV journey~

Australia is really a country with a very developed RV industry. With all kinds of careful design and mature supporting services, people will feel that RV travel is not inferior to hotels or apartments at all. Later, I will talk about the RV campsites all over Australia

Tips for collection and return of RV

About pick up time

The opening time of the RV company is usually 7:30-16:00, which is sure to maximize the use of the rental time of the RV. So we arrived at the RV company at 7:30 that day, but we still ranked second so early. Fortunately, the big boys in Europe and America in front of us are walk-in, just in time for the day when all the RV have been reserved, so they can only wait indefinitely to see if there are any cancelled guests. This also tells us that if we want to drive a RV, we must prepare ahead of time. Walking in on the same day will not work. It takes about 60-90 minutes to pick up the car.

Pick up process

First of all, show the reservation form at the counter to verify the reservation information, if you need to make up the balance, there will be payment process, explanation and purchase of insurance, notice of high-speed payment, etc; It should be noted that you must bring the pre order and pre authorized credit card to the site.

There are a lot of maps and other useful information to get free of charge

You can also use the waiting time to check in online to save the time of registration information.

After all the procedures are completed, other staff will drive your RV to do the handover of the specific RV.

Appearance 1. Take photos of the car's appearance, especially the details, and check whether there are scratches or bumps on the car body; Check the roof for damage (the roof is not covered)

2. There are two key inspection items: one is sunshade; The second is the wiper. Be sure to open and retract the hood, operate it several times and start the wiper for a while. To avoid future trouble!

3. Whether the windows and doors are intact or not; The door is double-layer, and the tightness of the screen door should also be checked.

Oil tank, water tank, accessories, etc

1. Check whether the instrument panel, oil tank and water tank are full

2. Is the gas tank full

3.Are the wires complete

4. Whether the water supply pipe and sewage pipe are complete and the length is enough

5. Check whether the faucet interface for water supply is complete. The specifications of taps in different states of Australia are different, and the aperture of taps in each state camp is different, so there are 2-3 taps on the RV. There are three taps on our RV. I use them all the way through Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. If it's not enough, I have to ask the RV company for them. Water pipes should also be checked to see if there is a flat or folded place. In short, carefully check the accessories provided.

6. Whether the electrical appliances in the car (such as microwave oven) can be used normally, and how many remote controls are there for TV and DVD (the chance of using them is quite small, but it is easy to lose them due to their small size)

7. Be sure to know that the power of the RV is always controlled there. In case of an accident, turn off the power at the first time.

8. Each car is equipped with two sets of keys, which must be kept well.

Kitchenware and bedding

1. Whether the kitchen utensils are complete without defects, and the dishes and bowls are not enough, you can ask to add them.

2. If the number of bedding and outdoor tables and chairs in the car is complete, three sets of bedding bags will be provided for six people, with double beds inside.

About return time

Generally, the RV company leaves work at 16:00, so we must arrive at the RV company before 15:30 and reserve at least half an hour for the staff to check. Australian people don't work overtime, so don't be late.

Car return process

1. It's also to check the inside and outside view, clean the car before returning it, and make sure to fill up the fuel tank. It's clean when you pick up the car, and it's also clean when you return the car, otherwise you may be charged a cleaning fee.

2. In particular, the sewage box in the toilet should be emptied. This needs to be done in advance at the camp's dedicated facilities.

3. After checking whether the appearance and supplies are complete, the staff will check whether there are any accidents or fines on the Internet.

The waiting area also has a special playground for children

If there is no violation, the staff will immediately return the $250 deposit and sign the relevant documents. The RV company will help to call a taxi to take the guests to the hotel or airport.

Introduction [those RV campsites all over Australia]

Australia is worthy of being a RV country with complete and mature supporting facilities. There may not be a gas station every 20-30 km, but a RV camp can be found. Every camp is a harbor for travelers and a paradise for children!

RV self driving is really a cost-effective way of travel, especially in Australia, where the price of food and accommodation is not low. The total cost of our 15 night RV camp is only rmb3900, while the cost of our four night apartment hotel is rmb5200.

When collecting the RV, the RV company will provide a pamphlet of Big4 campsite in Australia, which contains the telephone number, address and introduction of all Big4 campsites. It is a red book for RV self driving. Big4 national chain, facilities and services are great, and britz or Apollo RV can enjoy 10% discount when staying in Big4.

RV campsites are also divided into stars, generally more than four stars are very good. All the camps are very clean, and each camp is like a small resort.

The standard charge of the camp is that a RV covers two adults by default, a power site with water and electricity is about $36-50, and an additional adult or child is about $8-10 per person. Of course, there are also unpowered sites. It's not much cheaper. It's basically the same as living in the wild. It's not recommended!

Power site is divided into slab power site and grass power site. The price is basically the same, and each has its own advantages. I personally prefer to sleep more smoothly in cement. I can tell the receptionist my preference when I check in.

This is the best power site we've ever lived in, with green plants as a partition.

This kind of parking space with independent toilet is more advanced, which is a little more expensive than the ordinary power site.

The RV camp also provides cabins for tourists who drive their own cars. In addition to bedrooms, the cabins also have basic facilities such as kitchens and toilets.

This is the front desk of the RV camp. Generally, you have to check in here first. You don't need any deposit, just pay the full amount. The check out time of RV campsites is usually 10:00 in the morning, and you can leave by yourself before 10:00 (some campsites need to return the key or sensor card).

After completing the formalities, the receptionist will give you a map of the camp, and mark the location of your parking space, kitchen, toilet and other public facilities on it. Sometimes, the password for entering and leaving the camp or toilet will also be written.

Besides maps, sometimes you'll be given keys or sensors

Some campsites need to swipe cards at the entrance, and some need to enter a password to lift the pole.

This is a power site with water and electricity piles.

The first thing to do in the camp every day is to get water and electricity

The air conditioner, microwave oven and other electrical appliances on the RV can only be used after the power is connected

Each camp has 1-2 public kitchens

Generally, it is equipped with stove, microwave oven, oven, etc

There must be BBQ grill inside or outside the kitchen

Some kitchens and restaurants are also part-time multi-function entertainment rooms

Every camp kitchen has our mark

There will also be reading rooms and playrooms in the camps

We have lived in so many campsites, and the toilets in all campsites are clean and tidy, which is inseparable from everyone's conscious maintenance after use. We also clean them with mops after use. Hot water is awesome in every camp.

Some of the public toilets in the camps need keys to get in and out

The sensor on the key is used to open the lifting pole of the camp gate

Some of the toilets in the camp need password access

The bathroom in the best camp ever lived is single and for both men and women

An area in the camp where toilet sewage is removed

There are also public laundry rooms and special drying areas in the camp

Every camp is a paradise for children~

Doudou's favorite trampoline

And her favorite little animal

Introduction chapter [the delicious food of RV tour]

Australia has delicacy: Vegetable & fruit, meat, natural fruit and fish and chips. But if you let the old people and children eat them, I'm afraid they will not be able to bear it. So today we talk about how awesome and affordable the RV trip is.

As I said before, rice cookers and chopsticks are absolutely necessary for Chinese people.

For the sake of the Chinese stomach of the whole family, we are also very competitive. We not only carry rice cookers for thousands of miles, but also bring a lot of staple food and seasonings. Although food inspection is very strict when entering Australia, these in my photos are all allowed to enter. But remember to declare it. If it is found that there is food that cannot enter the country after declaration, it will only detain the food materials and give a verbal reminder; But if no declaration is found, they will face a fine of at least $300.

Every morning we have a European breakfast, milk soaked in Australia's unique cereal cereal (this cereal is 100 likes), bread with peanut butter, chocolate sauce, juice, fruit and salad, and we are full~

After breakfast, we will also use the kitchen of the camp to finish lunch. The rice is cooked the night before. This not only saves time, can play more, and can eat delicious hot lunch.

Grandma Doudou is responsible for producing all kinds of delicious fried rice. The picture below shows the delicious fried rice with curry potato and egg on iron plate.

Put it in the rice cooker, it's still hot at noon.

If we come across fresh seafood on the road, we will also buy extra food~

Just find a beautiful place for lunch and enjoy the delicious food and beautiful scenery~

Sometimes in the afternoon we would go into the supermarket in the small town to buy supplies

Sometimes there will be sweet afternoon tea

In the evening, we will enjoy the most abundant meal of the day in the well-equipped kitchen of the camp.

Doudou dad's BBQ skill is really good. Every night's barbecued meal comes from him~

There's pizza and homemade desserts~

Doudou grandfather is also a good cook. His fried sauce is one of our treasures. We'll put the fried sauce in the refrigerator and eat it with hot noodles. It saves time and tastes good

We DIY every meal for the sake of the old and young Chinese stomachs, and for the sake of more time for sightseeing. In small Australian towns, it's usually like curfew after five o'clock:) of course, it's more affordable. We really don't control the budget when eating. But even with all kinds of meat chops and seafood shouting every day, the average meal cost of the whole family is only RMB400 + / day.

To be continued~
